If your business regularly ships or receives large quantities or oversized items, there is a very good chance that you need some sort of loading and unloading product. This is especially true for businesses that lack a traditional, concrete loading dock. Two items commonly used for situations like this are dock levelers and yard ramps. The question then becomes, which one do you need?
Dock levelers and yard ramps are very similar when it comes to their purpose. They both offer your facility with the access necessary for large shipments. Both can provide the connection needed to quickly drive a forklift between the truck and your facility, carrying pallets of shipments as it goes.
Permanent versus Temporary
One of the main differences between dock levelers and yard ramps is their permanence. Dock levelers are meant to be much more permanent structures. They often use a hydraulic pump or manual crank to raise and lower the platform to serve as a connection between a truck and and dock platform. However they are typically designed and manufactured to be installed as an integral part of your facility. This means that they are not necessarily meant to be moved which could be your goal.
Yard ramps, on the other hand, are a little more on the versatile side. These structures are built with the mindset that they will eventually be moved. They serve as a ramp providing ground access when no structure is present. These heavy duty ramps allow forklifts to easily transfer goods from truck to facility.
Motorized versus Non-Motorized
Another major difference is the motor capacities of each product. Dock levelers will have some form of adjustment in place. For example, many dock levelers use a hydraulic system to raise or lower the platform. Alternatively, it can use a crank system where the operator needs to manually adjust the platform In either case, the platform can be raised or lowered.
A yard ramp does not typically have a height adjustment function, unless you are considering a mobile yard ramp. Mobile yard ramps have a crank system that allows you to make some adjustments whereas stationary yard ramps do not.
In the end, the best product to choose is the one that best suits your needs. For more information about stationary or mobile yard ramps, contact Medlin Ramps online or give us a call at 877-4-MEDLIN.
