Concrete Ramps vs. Steel Ramps

So in a battle of yard ramps and loading docks, which type reigns supreme? Let’s take a look at the two contenders; concrete ramps and steel ramps.

Mobility

 

Mobility proves to be a viable issue if your company has multiple points of entry into the warehouse, you have ebbs and flows in terms of volume, or you don’t usually ship or receive large quantities of goods.

 

When it comes to mobility, mobile steel yard ramps obviously have the edge. Concrete ramps are permanent and immobile. Once you lay the foundation and solidify your concrete ramp, you aren’t moving it again unless you demo the whole ramp.

 

Mobile steel yard ramps are meant to handle the same job as a concrete ramp, with the added value that it can be moved to other locations if needed. This comes in handy if you need to ship or receive pallets from a different location or if you just want to store it away.

 

Durability

 

Durability is the reason that concrete and steel are the primary materials used to build ramps for loading docks. Other materials simply can’t handle the weight and pressure that comes from being traversed by a forklift carrying a pallet.

 

There really is no winner in the durability department. Both concrete and steel can handle loads of weight and while not impervious, are less likely to be damaged.

 

Flexibility

 

Flexibility comes into play when a vehicle carrying goods is not compatible with your bay entrance.

 

Concrete yard ramps, as stated, are permanent and immobile. They cannot be raised or lowered based on the level of the vehicle. However, steel yard ramps are usually built with flexibility in mind. They can be adjusted to fit the needs of the vehicle delivering or receiving goods.

 

Traction

 

Both concrete and steel yard ramps have good traction. Concrete absorbs water which means it usually does not become slick in rainfall. With that said, it can become slick if gasoline or oil has built up along the ramp.

 

Steel yard ramps are built with serrated steel making the surface a textured design. This textured design provides more friction which allows for better traction in the rain, snow, and even some oil buildup.

 

For most situations, a steel yard ramp is a better and less expensive option than erecting a permanent, concrete ramp.
