With all of the material handling products on the marketplace, it can be hard to know which jobs – and which circumstances – require which equipment.
With that in mind, we here at Medlin Ramps have a little blog series going on this year on the specific applications where our products make a big difference in the quality and efficiency of your work. How do you know which ramps are right for you? How can you be sure you have the dock board that is perfect for your loading needs? When do you need a man basket, a work platform or a jib boom – or a crane, for that matter? (Although, of course, we do not sell cranes.)
Wait a minute – jib boom? Despite its name (which, let’s be honest, sounds like the name of an independent hip-hop artist) the jib boom is a great example of a trusted, classic technology that is still aiding workers on a variety of jobs today.
The term “jib boom” is salty old nautical language. It is a piece of equipment originally invented for ships – a part of the rigging that makes up a bow and allows sailors to, well, sail the vessel (that is what sailors do, after all.) Of course, here at Medlin Ramps, we do not exactly spend all of our time fighting pirates and navigating the high seas – we are manufacturers of material handling solutions – so our jib booms are a little different.
Our jib booms are large pieces of equipment that hook and lift materials into the air. They are typically used on construction sites and other areas where work needs to be performed at an elevation. Unlike work platforms, which are designed with personnel in mind (and the ability to lift smaller amounts of materials) the purpose of the jib boom, to put it simply, is to lift large amounts of materials into the air out of a tight space. It is similar in concept and execution to a crane, but it is operated from a forklift and spares you the time, expense, logistical trouble and extensive labor needs of a crane. In this sense, it’s something of a mid-level material handling solution.
There are thousands of different applications where different jib boom capabilities are needed, and we understand that, because material handling solutions have been our passion since 1991. We know that every job has different equipment needs, which is why we offer custom jib booms from 500 lbs. to 6,000 lbs., ensuring that no matter your task, we have the solution for you. All of our jib booms feature industry-standard, high-quality safety chains, swivels, hooks and shackles.
Our booms are constructed from heavy duty carbon tube steel, so you can rely on their strength and durability, and can be operated from a forklift with anywhere from 2″ to 5″ forks – although if you need a custom fork pocket, we are always available to make that happen for you.
If you are in the market for a jib boom, we would like to put our experience and expertise to work for you. Contact us today.
